Making a rough sketch is one of the most important pre-production step which a designer should always follow. It helps the designer to easily experiment with and try different layout and designs. Secondly, it also helps the designer to have a reference picture of what he is trying to make which is more efficient and saves time.

This is my first rough sketch for my first magazine cover which I am going to make using Photoshop.

At first I thought about adding the title above the portrait but after comparing both versions (of text behind and above) the text behind the portrait looked better and was still readable. So I choose text behind rather than text above the portrait.

NEWS MAGAZINE: For my second sketch, I went with a little different approach. I did not add any borders nor any text behind covering any image/portrait. I decided to play around with the title and rotated it vertically with the date stretched out under it. Added the news headline at the bottom with text under for the byline.
