The cover page of the magazine is one of the most important key features to attract audience. A good cover page builds up curiosity about what is inside the cover increasing its sales. There are four major types of magazine cover designs. Image/photo based, illustration based, concept based, and typography based.

1. Image/Photo based Magazine covers

This is a image based magazine cover design. Some of the common examples are celebrity and fashion magazines. In these, there may be one or more persons looking directly onto the camera.

2. Illustration based Magazine covers

Illustration is a form of visual representation without the use of real images. Illustration magazine covers have kept its high popularity since the 1920s. It is nowadays used to present something extraordinary or unique which cannot be achieved by real photography. A good illustration magazine cover makes the consumer understand what they want them to understand.

3. Concept based Magazine covers

This is the most complex magazine cover type out of all. The audience should easily be able to understand the idea which the magazine is trying to convey. The consumer should know at a glance that what type of magazine it is. For example a house decoration magazine would have different furniture items with vibrant colored walls.

4. Typography based Magazine covers

Typography based magazines have a strategic cover design which tries to convey their message to the consumers without using images. These can convey much better than images, however they are rarely seen these days as publishers find it a riskier approach that their magazine might not end up as well as the other magazines in the market.
